Week 1: Watch the 3 videos, all use the 12 bar blues structure but are very different. In the comments box name your favourite and give your musical reasons why! If you have any problems email Mrs Gower ag@monkswalk.herts.sch.uk. Any prep not done will mean no practical in the next lesson I’m afraid.
Video 1: Tin Roof Blues-Louis Armstrong
Video 2: BB King-Blues Boys Tune
Video 3: Michael Jackson-Black or White
jake said:
I think that video 3 is the best one because it has more of a jumpy melody and you can dance tom it better than the other songs which are quite slow.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Can you remember the name of that rhythm from the lesson today Jake?
jake said:
Was it swingy
mrsgowersclasses said:
It uses swing rhythms yes. Does it do anything else that we have tried in class?
Isabella said:
I like “Black or White” best because it is more upbeat and I enjoyed to listen to it. The tune is happy unlike the others
mrsgowersclasses said:
What makes it upbeat do you think? Any idea why the first 2 examples didn’t sound happy?
Isabella said:
The bass and the beat were quicker, and had more quavers in them so unlike the other two, which were more just crotchets, the pace sounded quicker and more lively. Also the notes played on the other two were lower and slower, making it sound less happy. Also the fact it had lyrics, which is more like pop; the music we like and are used to today (and happy ones too!) made it more likeable I think.
Harveylloyd said:
The other two didn’t really sound that happy because it was like only one monotone and the black and white one was quite funky and bright
mrsgowersclasses said:
Great, what makes it monotone? The actual instrument sound or the way it’s played?
Rose said:
I like the song from michael jackson as it sounded a bit more modern than the others i liked the rythem in the second one but couldnt hear the melodys the first one was very laud bavk and calm
mrsgowersclasses said:
Can you remember the name for those rhythms from the lesson today Rose?
Rose said:
Straight and swingy
mrsgowersclasses said:
Yep. Can you tell me a drum pattern that uses straight quavers?
Rose said:
Base ,base. ,highat, snare, base
James N said:
My favourite song was Tin Roof Blues by Louis Armstrong because of the simple but effective, with varied tones and the additional singing or talking. The tempo isn’t as fast as number 3 but the trumpet and clarinet is all they need to perform to a high standard.
mrsgowersclasses said:
James I’m so pleased you chose one that wasn’t in a pop style! Can you identify what and how the instruments play in this piece as that’s what I’d like you to do in this project!
James N said:
The trumpets warbles to increase jazziness and it is most probably muted with swing and blues songs like itself, and the clarinet and piano had very varied notes
mrsgowersclasses said:
How are those notes created James?
mrsgowersclasses said:
PS great to identify the way the trumpets are played as a characteristic of this style of music-well done
Caitlin-Elizabeth said:
I liked the 3 video because the meldoy was very up beat and i could here all the cords on a guitar i think the cords were C 16 times on the top bar and on the seconed bar it was F 8 times and C 8 times and on the bottem line it was G 4 times F 4 times and c8 times.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Well remembered from the lesson Caitlin! you are quite right with the chords we learned to play today!
Caitlin-Elizabeth said:
Thanks miss
mrsgowersclasses said:
Is there anything else you like about these pieces?
Caitlin-Elizabeth said:
yes there is it was very swingy and the music is the type I like and it was the rhythm what I liked as well
mrsgowersclasses said:
Can you describe that rhythm?
Ella Murray said:
I think the third one is the best. I think this because the rhythm is faster and the way the music is played is slightly trendier! I also like the fact that it was faster.
mrsgowersclasses said:
I like that you admit the 3rd one is more modern. Do you think that’s why you chose it?
Ella Murray said:
Possibly, I think I chose it because its what I’m used to. I found the others a bit odd and I think that the third song tells a story of love and not to stereo-type people. This is why I chose the third one!
Poppy said:
I prefer song 3 because I like the fast beat and it has lyrics, whereas the others don’t. I also like it because has quite a catchy tune.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Do the lyrics tell a story? Does that story appeal to you as well?
Poppy said:
I think the lyrics do tell a story; true love doesn’t consider the colour or race of the person that you fall in love with. The story of the song does appeal to me, because I do not think that people should be judged by the colour of their skin.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Great answer, well done. That’s great that the subject of the song resonated with something you believe in.
Jessica said:
I think that video 2 is the best as I love the jazzy feeling it gives on the guitar and the beat is good to dance too! Also the patterns are really effective and the techniques of the strumming is cool. My favourite bit is when the drums accompanies the guitar 🙂
mrsgowersclasses said:
Jessica, well done for choosing one that isn’t in a pop style! Great that you identified where in the piece the drums came in. Good work!
Jessica said:
Thanks which one is your favorite miss?
mrsgowersclasses said:
I get to choose all my favourite music so I do like them all, but if I had to choose I think Tin Roof Blues. It’s in a Dixie Jazz style and I like how each instrument has the freedom to improvise around their part.
Ved said:
I think that video 3 is the best one because it is a bit too jazzy and fast while the other songs were boring.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Ved, what do you think makes them boring? They are all examples of jazz so they should all sound jazzy?
Ved said:
Although they were all Jazz. Unlike the first two songs, the third one was complemented by its lyrics and its picturisation. Hence, it was comparitively more appealing to me.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Is the 3rd one jazz do you think?
Ved Prakash Kondaboiena said:
Yes miss,
I think the third one is an example of jazz music because it has a fast tempo and a swing rhythm.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Great. Are the instruments typical of jazz music too?
Ved said:
Revision- I liked the 2nd video as it was a version of the blues. It had a good tempo and a nice tune which made me listen to it again and again.
Tom said:
My favourite song is Black or White.
This is because it has a faster tempo than the others.
It also has a catchier melody, and has lyrics, which make it much more interesting.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Good answer Tom. Can you try and identify what it is that makes that melody catchy?
max said:
my favourite is black or white because it had a lot more variety of instruments in which I enjoyed. also I liked the tempo which was quicker than the other two which made it more enjoyable for me
mrsgowersclasses said:
A very good answer Max. Why is a faster tempo more enjoyable for you do you think?
max chambers said:
when the tempo is slow it feels layed back which I don’t enjoy and like its meant to be in the background but its by itself therefore I prefer the fast tempo.
mrsgowersclasses said:
How can a tempo be by itself? It’s the speed a piece goes. The instruments then play with this to create the music. What exactly is it that you don’t like in that piece Max?
Nikola said:
The first two songs were very slow but the third one was more jumpy and had great melody so black and white would be a more jumpy dancing song.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Can a tempo (speed of the music) be jumpy Nik? I think you mean rhythm, can you remember the name of that rhythm from the lesson today?
Nikola said:
I think it is a swingy rythm.
mrsgowersclasses said:
That’s right – swing. Do all the songs use the same rhythm?
Louisa said:
I think video 3 is the best because the other two are slow but the 3rd is up beat and very catchier it also has lyrics so this makes it more interesting.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Do you think music can tell a story without lyrics?
Louisa said:
Yes a basic story
mrsgowersclasses said:
How does the music suggest that it’s a basic story though? Is there anything simple in the music?
Josie said:
I think that video 1 is the best because i like the instruments used and i like how it has a slower tempo .
mrsgowersclasses said:
What is it you like abut those instruments?
mrsgowersclasses said:
Which instruments do you like? How is this different to the other pieces?
Josie said:
I like the saxophone in it because it gives off the jazzy feel of the music. It is different to the other clips as it is has more melodies and has a slower tempo
mrsgowersclasses said:
Yep good answer-saxophone is often associated with jazz music and the tempo is quite slow in this example.
Aimee said:
i like number 3 the most because it has a fast beat and has lyrics that make it catchy and fun to listen to
mrsgowersclasses said:
What is it about the lyrics that make them catchy?
Aimee said:
because i think they go really well with the music and they have a lot of meaning about race ‘and there is lots of discussion about that topic, he is saying a his opinion and that it shouldn’t matter about the colour of your skin .
mrsgowersclasses said:
Great. Are the other songs also telling some kind of story?
Aimee said:
i wouldn’t say they were but the artist could have made that song because one of there experiences or one of there stories so there could defiantly be a story to the songs.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Yes absolutely. Do you know the history of The Blues? That may give a clue to the traditional choice of lyrics used in some examples.
Emilia said:
I prefer Micheal Jacksons “black or white’. I like it because it has catchy lyrics and a catchy guitar riff. Even though music can tell a story without lyrics, if you put your feelings into it. It also has a variety of instruments in it compared to video 1 and 2. I think i chose it over the others because i have grown up listening to pop music and not a lot of jazz/blues.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Lovely answer. What exactly is it that makes these riffs catchy?
Emilia said:
They are repetitive so you can easily hum along to it.
mrsgowersclasses said:
What are repetitive?
Emilia said:
The riff which the guitar plays.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Yep, good.
isaac said:
I think that video 2 is the best because it is simple with just the drums and guitar and were both in time with each other. I also think it is the best because it has a brilliant guitarist.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Can you describe what the guitarist actually plays?
isaac said:
i think its called a riff
mrsgowersclasses said:
There are riffs in there good. Does the guitarist play anything else though?
Isaac said:
He plays chords and improvises
Lucy said:
I like Tin Roof Blues the best as I like the instruments used to create the music, such as the trumpet and piano. I also like the beat and while is has a slower tempo than the other two, I still like it best.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Great answer. Can you describe the rhythms used after the lesson we had today?
Lucy said:
I think the name of the rhythum was swing.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Yep. Is it swung all the way through the piece do you think?
Lucy said:
I don’t think it is swung all through the piece as some parts sound different from others.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Great so where in the piece does it change? Why do you think this happens?
Funso said:
I like the “black and white” by Michael Jackson because it’s fast paced and the lyrics in the song also compliment the beat. The electric guitar sounds good with the music
mrsgowersclasses said:
Is it the lyrics that compliment the beat or the melody do you think?
Funso said:
I think it’s the melody because if the melody is off the whole song together wouldn’t have synchronized as well as it would have
mrsgowersclasses said:
How is the melody constructed do you think?
Funso Oduwole said:
(Replying to second comment) the melody is constructed because of the dynamics of the beat.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Right so the melody follows the beat closely. But I’m interested in how the performer decides what to play. Any ideas?
riley said:
I think that the micheal jackson one was the best because it was very up beat and I also liked all the diffrent instruments
mrsgowersclasses said:
What do you like about them? Can you name them?
Guillaume said:
My favourite one is the second one because it does not look like he has even rehearsed it and it is all coming from the top of his head which is real improvising.
It is a very relaxed rhythm and jazz/lounge beat.
mrsgowersclasses said:
How can you learn from this when you are improvising?
Guillaume said:
I think I need to keep it relaxed and swingy and keep it coming all the time going back to the chords when needed.
mollie said:
My favorite piece of music was black and white by Michael Jackson as i’m not into the other two because i prefer songs that are like loud and you can just get up and dance if you no what i mean,
but I think that the other artists where very talented.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Do you think you like this one because you are more familiar with the style of music?
Owen said:
In my own opinion I prefer number three because I think it isn’t slow like the other two are. I think that it had a good pace to the melody however the other are relaxing and they both had a bit of jazz to them.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Good to identify the jazz characteristics. Can you remember any of the words we used in the lesson to describe it?
Aileen said:
My favourite was piece number 2 because I love the Jazzy style. The tempo was a little slower than black or white but a bit faster than tin roof blues so I like how it’s in the middle. The guitar sounds great but I liked it best when the drum started to accompany the guitar. I loved the patterns played and over all it is a great jazzy song, with a good beat to dance to!
mrsgowersclasses said:
Can you describe what these instruments are playing?
Aileen said:
The instruments are playing steady beats and it has a low pitch. The instruments are playing a very jazzy piece perfect for this type of tune- blues.
mrsgowersclasses said:
What makes it jazzy?
Aileen said:
I think the way the notes and instruments play makes it jazzy. They use swing beats that make it sound jazzy.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Which instruments in particular are associated with jazz?
Bashir said:
I liked the last one because it had a good rythm and tempo
mrsgowersclasses said:
How was the rhythm in the other 2 different?
ellen said:
I loved the 2nd one because the melody/riff was soulful and looked like it came from the heart also I liked that at some parts it would flow and at some parts it was jumpy (I think that’s called stacatto and lagatto I don’t know) I also liked 3 because it had lyrics and also a catchy repitive melody/riff. 🙂
ellen said:
Also in 2 Iiked the way he slid his fingers to make the sound and tune almost kind of wiggle through notes
Jess ;) said:
what was it that you didn’t like about the others? 🙂
mrsgowersclasses said:
I’m not a massive fan of the guitar-based blues. Just personal preference I guess? I do like Black and White but as it’s only 12 bar blues chords and few other stylistic characteristics of the genre I went for the other one!
ellen said:
The reason I don’t really like the first one is because I’m not fond of like bar piano music because it doesn’t seem very orgnised or in tune
mrsgowersclasses said:
What is it that doesn’t sound organised? How are they creating the music?
Francis said:
i like ‘Black and white’ by Michael Jackson most because it’s upbeat, catchy and has a good rhythm to it.
mrsgowersclasses said:
What is a good rhythm? Which instruments play the rhythm?
Francis said:
it’s when everything is in tune and fits together. Drums and guitar played the rhythm.
mrsgowersclasses said:
What type of rhythm do they play?
Jess ;) said:
My favourite was definately 3 because the first one’s tempo was a bit slow for me and the 2nd was a bit simple. It only had two instruments in which i think were the drums and guitar. Another reason i liked Black & White the most was that i like to be able to sing along to a song and the others didnt have any lyrics which was a problem for me. If i saw those two performed it would be hard to dance along to them although Black & White is already stuck in my head. 🙂
Also Ellen you were right it is called stacatto and lagatto. 🙂
mrsgowersclasses said:
Great answer! Well done. Can you describe any of the characteristics of the first 2 that make them different from the first?
Jess ;) said:
the first ones tempo was much slower than the rest and the second one was a bit more jazzy than the other two
mrsgowersclasses said:
How is music more ‘jazzy’ Jess?
Jess ;) said:
It’s more upbeat than the first one but not as complex as the third. Also the instruments in it are simpler than in the others. I’m not sure this is anything to do with it but in the 2nd one there is no pattern to the tune, it almost as though he improvises.
mrsgowersclasses said:
He does improvise, fab answer. I still son’t know what an ‘upbeat’ rhythm is though Jess, can you explain?
Jess ;) said:
An upbeat rythem is usually quite fast and exciting, they make you want to dance, to put it simply.
Josef said:
my favorite song was blues boy “tune” because it had a medium speed tempo and a nice beat.
mrsgowersclasses said:
What are the characteristics of these songs?
Josef said:
they are rather slow but enjoyable
mrsgowersclasses said:
Why? What makes it enjoyable?
Josef said:
it’s enjoyably because it has a slow and steady beat
Max s said:
And also the 3rd one is more modern
James said:
I liked the third song the best because i am more familiar with that kind of music and i find it more interesting to listen to. Also i find the other two songs not as up beat as Black or White.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Which do you think sounds the most like ‘blues’ music?
jasmine811 said:
I like 3 the best as it has a nice tempo and beat that is quick but steady. I also like how the instruments accompany each other nicely and sound good together. However I believe that because it is more of a modern song I prefer it as I like modern songs and found the others a bit boring however the riffs in the others were good and I especially liked the guitar is 2 but 3 is may favourite.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Great, now can you describe how the things you like in Video 3 are different from video 1 and 2?
jasmine811 said:
I preferd the quicker tempoin 3 as it is nice and i like quicer tempos better than the slow ones. I also like the variation in instruments but also how they fit together . I do have to admit that 1is simmular in that way but 2 is very diffrent as it was mainly the guitar and not mayother instruemnts.
mrsgowersclasses said:
So do you also like the range of instruments used? What’s the difference between instruments that are ‘produced’ in a studio and those that are played live?
jasmine811 said:
I do also like the range of instruments used.
The instruments that are actually played are stronger and more defined as well as sounding relistic. However some instruments that are produced sound in the same way strong and defined but can sound fake and too defined and too perfect. The difrence is also that one is a real instrument and the ones produced are just a sound that has been edited to sound good.
max said:
I think Michael Jacksons black or white is best because it is more up beat and it has more of a variety of instruments
mrsgowersclasses said:
Can you describe how the instruments in B and W are different from the other songs?
Max said:
In black or white there is an electric guitar and drums
mrsgowersclasses said:
Which is the most important instrument in Black and White?
max s said:
I think the most important instruments are the electric guitar, the vocals and the drums
Erin said:
My favourite out of the 3 blues songs was black or white.
This is because it has catchy lyrics and it is more enagetic than the other 2.
Another reason why i liked black or white best is because i am familiar with michael jacksons songs and the way he sings them.
He is one of my favourite artists so it would be hard not to like black or white over the others!
mrsgowersclasses said:
That’s a fair point, we always like music we are more familiar with! Can you identify what is different in the other songs, how do they sound different to B and W?
Erin said:
the ways in which black or white is different to the two other songs are:
~because black or white has a faster tempo
~it has lyrics
~has a range of swing beats
~kind of has different tempos and rythms throughout the song (if you know what i mean!)
mrsgowersclasses said:
Love this. But does B and W have swing rhythms or a rock rhythm?
Oliver said:
I think Michael Jackson’s ‘Black or White’ because the electric guitar complements his singing and the beat in the background very well. It suits the subject of the song.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Great to identify an instrument you liked. Now can you explain how you think that fits with the subject of the song?
Oliver said:
It makes it more meaningful and relevant.
Amy said:
I preferred song 3 because it had a more up beat and modern. I did like the other two though because you could tell that they were really feeling it and I liked the saxophone in the first one.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Can you say what else makes the 3rd one sound modern?
Aaliyah said:
I think that the third song was the best because up beat melody that makes it stuk in your head, but the other two songs where a bit boring and les interesting and catchy 🙂
mrsgowersclasses said:
What do you think makes a melody sound catchy?
Aaliyah said:
Because the beat of the song that repeats in the song and the beat gets stuck in your head
mrsgowersclasses said:
Great, so some of the music is repetitive. Good. Is it just the beat that repeats or anything else?
Harry said:
I liked the 3 videos, because there use of base and lyrics. The also are very good in my opinion because they got stuck in my head.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Do you have one that you like more than the others? Are they different, if so how?
Harry said:
I like the number 3 because of its use of tempo and the number of beats that we learned in class
mrsgowersclasses said:
Can you describe the tempo? What is the name of the rhythm this piece uses?
Harvey said:
I like the third video the best because it is faster so its more exciting for me
mrsgowersclasses said:
What exactly makes it exciting?
Harvey said:
Because there are vocals unlike the two others
mrsgowersclasses said:
Can music tell a story without vocals? Why/why not?
aliciareed1 said:
video number 2 because it has a jazzy beat and he changes the rhythm as well so that’s my favourite
mrsgowersclasses said:
Can you remember the name for that type of beat? When it changes, how does it change?
aliciareed1 said:
I cant remember the name for that beat but when it changes he like changes the speed tempo of the song and gets other instruments to join in
mrsgowersclasses said:
Great, so he changes the tempo, does anything else change?
aliciareed1 said:
yes the rhythm becomes more upbeat
maisie said:
i like the the top 2 because they are different and different is good
mrsgowersclasses said:
Fab. Now can you identify how they are different?
Maisie said:
The top 2 are different from the song black and white by the top to more up beat
mrsgowersclasses said:
Can you say how it’s more ‘up-beat’? What does that sound like?
dougall said:
The third one was my favourite because the rhythm was repeated and was more modernises it more with singing and a tiny rap which improves the beat
mrsgowersclasses said:
What else makes it sound modern? You’ve identified the rap and the repeated rhythm but is there anything else?
dougall said:
The change in tempo and there was more singing compared to the others. It. also had vocal variation.
mrsgowersclasses said:
How were the vocals varied?
dougall said:
He sung it high when it said black or white it was high vocals and when the man rapped it was used in low vocal. He also exaggerates notes by using minims or semibreves for the instruments used like the electric guitar.
mrsgowersclasses said:
OK so are you saying that the music changes according to the different sections of the piece? Why might this be?
mason said:
I’m not really a lover of blues However I did like the Michael Jackson song I felt it was up beat, different and trendier
mrsgowersclasses said:
Can you identify how it was different from the other songs?
mason said:
did it use a different range of swing beats ?
mrsgowersclasses said:
Good Mason, yes. Do all the videos use the same rhythms?
Ella-Mae said:
I like song 3 because i like Michael Jackson anyway and the song is really up beat and catchy
mrsgowersclasses said:
What is it about MJ songs that you like? The melody? Instruments? Beat? What makes it catchy?
Ella-Mae Hurrell said:
I like the beat because you can tap your freet while listening to it and the thing that makes it catchy is the music because it sticks un your head
mrsgowersclasses said:
Can you tap your feet to the beat in the other songs?
Ella-Mae Hurrell said:
I like the beat because you can tap your feet to it and the thing that makes it catchy is the lyrics and the piece that creates the up beat and catchy feel is the lyrics
mrsgowersclasses said:
I’m not sure how lyrics can create a beat. Do you think they are catchy for other reasons?
mrsgowersclasses said:
Which bits of the piece create the ‘up beat and catchy’ feel?
Ella-Mae Hurrell said:
yes so you can keep singing and people will here you singing it and they will like the song
mrsgowersclasses said:
I’m still interested in what it is about the song that makes you want to join in
Colm Fo said:
Colm said I liked the first one the most because how there was a main tune and when that stopped there was a different one
mrsgowersclasses said:
That’s great to identify the different melodies in that song. Why do you prefer how those sound to the melodies in the other pieces?
Max said:
I like Michael Jacksons black or white because it is more up beat and uses a wider variety of instruments
mrsgowersclasses said:
Can you compare the instruments in Black and White to those in the other songs? Are the different instruments a reason why you prefer the MJ piece?
Alex said:
I love Black or White best because it has a fun up-beat pace to it and it so really good especially the guitar in the background.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Can you describe in a bit more detail what the guitar actually plays?
alex said:
it plays a fun up beat rhythm and i think it goes really well with the song.
mrsgowersclasses said:
What is a fun up-beat type of rhythm?
Annabel said:
i think number 2 is the best because it sounds like he knows what he’s doing and the music without words actually sounds good it cinda has the 12 notes in it
c c c c
f f c c
f g c c
i think
i played it at home and recorded it on my phone
mrsgowersclasses said:
Brilliant, I love that you have played it and heard it at home, very well done. Did what you played sound like any of the videos? If not why not?
Annabel said:
i do think it sounds the same as the 12 notes
Anya said:
i like the 3rd video best because there’s a musical beat to it and the instruments used go really well with the song.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Can you describe what you think a musical beat is?
mrsgowersclasses said:
Can you give examples of the instruments you think fit the song and why? Because surely all instruments fit all songs yes? Or no?
Jack said:
I like the 3rd song as it’s more upbeat and was a song I enjoyed listening to, it’s more of a happy song unlike the rest of them
mrsgowersclasses said:
What is it that makes it sound happy do you think?
ryanb11 said:
I liked the third one because it made you want to listen to it more than the other ones
because it was fast, moving and it used different instruments well as you could hear that it was In time
Adam said:
I like number 3- black and white the best because it is modern
mrsgowersclasses said:
how do you know it’s modern?
Jack said:
I liked the 1st one which was tin roof blues by Louis Armstrong.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Can you explain what you liked about it? Give some examples?
Jack Mowll said:
I liked the instruments, e.g the saxophone because it was nice and relaxing in a way. I also like some of Louis armstrong’s music and songs
mrsgowersclasses said:
Which other Louis Armstrong songs have you heard? Great that you’ve listened to his music-it’s fab!
keir said:
i like black and white most because it was faster and it was easy to stay with the song couse it was more popular and modern then the others
mrsgowersclasses said:
How do you know the song is modern?
Jake U said:
I liked the first video because of the build of the different instruments and you can hear all of them so there is none overpowering the others
mrsgowersclasses said:
Which do you think is the most important instrument in this piece?
Jake U said:
i think they are all as important as each other as they all make up the song and help the others in one way
mrsgowersclasses said:
So there’s no melody then? Wouldn’t that be more important than the accompaniment? Or not?
Jake U said:
i think that the instruments are all even and it works fine that way
Tom said:
The melody is catchy because it is simple and easy to memorise, it grabs my attention, and it varies from the verses & chorus.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Ok. So what makes it easy to remember then?
ellie said:
I enjoyed black and white because it had a faster beat to it although i thought that the lyrics wasn’t as good, with the timing of the backing track.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Was the beat faster or the tempo?
ellie said:
the tempo, but so was the lyrics
mrsgowersclasses said:
If the tempo was faster, you’d expect everything to be faster though right? The tempo is the speed that the pulse goes. All the instruments play in time with this pulse.
Adam Merakech said:
I know its modern because I liked Michael Jackson and remember when it came out- its famous but I don’t know the other two
mrsgowersclasses said:
Fair enough Adam! Is there anything in the sounds of the music that also tell you this?
Olivia said:
i like the black or white because it was faster and i like the beat and its quite catchy i dont mind the lyrics i guess they were okay. but they could have been better. As they dont fit in to the melody
mrsgowersclasses said:
Which lyrics do you think don’t fit with the song?
Olivia Z said:
im not sure but after a while of listening to it you get used to it and you dont mind it at all.
mrsgowersclasses said:
What is it that you have to get used to? What sounds new or different in this music?
Olivia said:
after you listen to it you actually like the lyrics
Izzie said:
I like the 3rd one because it was faster and I like Michael Jackson and the other ones were more boring because they were slow
mrsgowersclasses said:
Does a slow tempo make a piece boring? What about what each instrument was playing?
izzie said:
I dont think a slow tempo makes the piece boring but I just think a quicker tempo makes it happier
James said:
I like Michael Jackson’s songs because of the beat and i also like the instruments used in the song. The lyrics and the singing makes the song catchy.
mrsgowersclasses said:
What about the beat do you like?
Owen said:
I think one of the words are a straight rhythm where as the other two was a swing rhythm.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Good Owen. Which videos use which rhythms?
jessica said:
I think the 3rd video was my favourite because I like the beat and the lyrics that go with the song. Also I liked the instruments that they used in the song.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Can you name the instruments? How were they used?
jessica said:
They used a guitar which was used in the backround.
mrsgowersclasses said:
What exactly does the guitar play?
jessica said:
It plays like a rock kind of tune that makes the song better
mrsgowersclasses said:
Fab. What makes it a rock style?
Harveylloyd said:
I think ‘black and white ‘ the reason is that it is kinda funky and there is and upbeat and it could be quite enjoying for kids in 12 years old
mrsgowersclasses said:
Can you unpick which bit of the song makes it sound funky?
Finlay said:
I liked the second one because it was simple not relying on different instruments for effect
mrsgowersclasses said:
Great observation! What did it do instead?
Finlay said:
they had a simple drum line and the guitarist just improvised
mrsgowersclasses said:
Great, does the drum beat have a name?
kujay said:
My favorite was video 1 because there was a variety of instruments. I didn’t like the 2nd video because it was too slow paced for me and i liked the 3rd video because i have heard it before and i like the rock theme to it.
mrsgowersclasses said:
If you had to choose between 1 and 3 which would it be and why?
kujay said:
I would choose 3 because it was more up beat and it had a lot of good instrumental background
mrsgowersclasses said:
I want to know what ‘up beat’ means. Also which instruments play in the background?
morgan said:
My favorite video ‘black and white’ because it is more upbeat and catchy.
mrsgowersclasses said:
What makes it upbeat and catchy?
Colm said:
Because Michel Jackson has shown by his actions that he thought it did matter if your black or white + the 2 nd song that man was just showing off
mrsgowersclasses said:
Is showing off a problem? What exactly is he showing skill at do you think?
Ryanb11 said:
I can’t find my target to reply to
mrsgowersclasses said:
So tell me more about the music Ryan
Ryanb11 said:
The music for the third one makes you more alive and the others don’t have that kick maybe it’s that the others are slower than the third one
mrsgowersclasses said:
Yes they do have a slower tempo. What else is different?
Ryanb11 said:
The third on has dancing, and singing in but the others don’t have any of them . I also things that the third one has a better beginning
mrsgowersclasses said:
OK, so you are commenting on the video as well as the music. Do you think you could dance to the other 2? Why/why not?
Anya said:
i think that a musical beat is the beat of the instruments used in the song
mrsgowersclasses said:
See I think each instrument plays something different.
Anya said:
because mj black or white is quite a fast song i think that the guitar went well with it i also think that the drums also went well with the song
mrsgowersclasses said:
What are they actually playing?
Rosie said:
I like the 3rd video because it’s got a swing rhythm and it’s a lot more jazzy and upbeat making it more exciting and interesting to listen to and it is more catchy .
mrsgowersclasses said:
Explain what up beat means?
Tom W said:
The melody is easy to memorise because it is simple and catchy, and more upbeat and happy.
mrsgowersclasses said:
Does the melody move by step? Is it a riff or does it change throughout?
harrison cockeral said:
i really liked the b.b king one because i just liked the way he just stopped then just went back on it
mrsgowersclasses said:
Can you say where in the song this happened?
junior said:
Ilike michael jackson’s song because it is upbeat and it makes you want to dance also it has a very good rhythm .
mrsgowersclasses said:
What makes it upbeat?
junior said:
the thing that makes it upbeat is the fact that it sort of moves you and makes you want to dance . also the whole thing is set out to be rhythmic .
Rosie said:
Upbeat i think is like positive and having an interesting and a unnactented beat preceding a downward beat .
mrsgowersclasses said:
Good you’re getting closer! Is it the tempo that makes it sound like an upbeat or what is actually played?
Funso Oduwole said:
I can’t find my comment
mrsgowersclasses said:
I’ll have a look and get back to you
Jack said:
I have listened to Wonderful world by Louis Armstrong
mrsgowersclasses said:
That’s great Jack
Aymen said:
i liked Michael Jackson black or white because I liked how the tune varied in different parts
mrsgowersclasses said:
Where did it vary?
ellen said:
It wouldn’t let me reply to you Mrs Gower so I’m going to do it here.
I think it sounds unorganized because I find it slightly difficult to find the beat.
The piece is created with an out of tune bar style piano and trumpets personally, i think it would of been better without the trumpets
mrsgowersclasses said:
What makes it sound out of tune? Is it to do with the melody or the chords?
ellen said:
Also it’s kind of improvaisation
Olivia said:
i alsio like the melody of the black or white
mrsgowersclasses said:
Can you say what it is about the melody that makes it appealing?
Colm said:
Michel jackson personally was just putting his own race to shame from is actions of changing his skin colour and then making that song+ the 2nd man was cocky but yeah i guess a bit of showing off is acceptable.
mrsgowersclasses said:
I like that you have your own opinions of this. Have a look at what others think about this song and his own reasons for writing it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_or_White
mason said:
yes I believe so
kujay said:
up beat: in time with the song. And saxophone, guitar, drums, bass
seb said:
number 3
mrsgowersclasses said:
Why have you chosen this one?
nathan.t said:
I think the 2nd 3rd were the best because the instruments played the best tune
But because the 3rd had lyrics I think that was the best because it made it more modern
Rosie said:
I think it is the tempo because if you play it slowly it is not as lively and a bit more dull but it is also what’s played because some instruments can be played fast and others can’t .
Adam said:
I liked number 3 (black or white) the best because it was fast paced and had a good rhyme
